Professor Maurine Neiberg brings a unique perspective to this space. Before becoming an attorney, she wrote software. She worked in the applied AI research center at the MITRE Corporation, where she saw firsthand that engineers creating software didn’t understand the legal underpinnings, and lawyers didn’t understand the technology.

Neiberg points out that this applies to everyone, noting that “everybody is working for somebody,” even if they eventually become entrepreneurs.
She explains that many engineers sign employment agreements without fully understanding them, which can lead to unintended consequences. In one example, she describes a client who created a video game while employed at a company, only to realize that “the work you do as an employee during the course of your employment belongs to your employer, not to you.”
While the situation was eventually resolved, it required negotiation and formal documentation. Experiences like this highlight why it is important to fully understand what you are agreeing to, as Neiberg explains that “understanding how that constrains you, and the law behind it, matters when you read a line of text and try to understand what it actually means.”
3. Engineers Gain the Ability to Interpret Legal Language in Context
Legal language often appears straightforward, but underlying laws and established practices shape its meaning. Engineers who understand this are better equipped to interpret what they are reading and avoid misinterpretation. As Neiberg explains, “that particular wording is relying on certain laws and practices being in place.”
This means it is not enough to read documents at face value. Engineers need to understand how legal language functions and what it implies in real-world scenarios. That level of awareness becomes especially important when reviewing contracts, policies, or agreements that may affect ownership, liability, or future opportunities. Without that understanding, engineers may agree to terms that limit how their work can be used, shared, or built upon.
4. Engineers Contribute More Effectively to Business and Technical Decisions
As engineers advance in their careers, they are increasingly involved in decisions that go beyond technical execution. Contracts, partnerships, and product strategies all involve legal considerations that influence business outcomes.
Neiberg highlights how this shows up when working with legal teams, explaining that “when you work with a lawyer, especially if you are entering into business deals, there will be documents to review.” She adds that “some terms are business decisions, others are more legal than business,” which means understanding both sides is essential for making informed choices. Engineers who can navigate these conversations bring added value to their teams. They can bridge technical and legal perspectives, which is increasingly important in product development, AI systems, and business strategy.
