Meet Adlane Haouchine, a member of the 2024 graduating class of the University of Illinois Chicago’s (UIC) online Master of Engineering with a focus area in AI and Machine Learning (MEng) program. Armed with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in electrical engineering with a focus in industrial electrotechnics, Adlane currently works as a Service Field Engineer in the manufacturing industry.
Adlane’s drive for innovation, coupled with the convenience of the online format, spurred his decision to join UIC’s online MEng program. He appreciated the engaging curriculum tailored to the cutting-edge domains of AI and ML, such as natural language processing (NLP), deep learning, and Python programming. He attributes his decision to pursue this educational journey to the program’s relevant coursework which aligned perfectly with his professional goals.

Tell us a little about yourself. What specific factors led you to choose the online MEng program at UIC?
I received my master’s degree in electrical engineering in 2019. Since then, I’ve been working as a Service Field Engineer.
In 2023, I began pursuing my MEng degree at UIC. I chose the online program for several reasons. Firstly, my passion for innovation, especially in AI and ML, drove my interest in exploring advancements within the manufacturing sector. Secondly, as a full-time worker, the flexibility offered by an online program was crucial for me. Lastly, being from Chicago, UIC’s alignment with my career goals made it an easy decision. I’m set to graduate this term.
What skills have you gained or sharpened through the online MEng program?
I’ve gained valuable insights and skills that I’m eager to implement. By studying advanced concepts in artificial intelligence and machine learning, I’ve developed a deeper understanding of how these technologies can be leveraged in various industries, including my own. Through the online MEng program, I have gained or sharpened skills in a wide range of areas including engineering, law, natural language processing (NLP), deep learning, Python programming, machine learning (ML), artificial intelligence (AI), computer vision, and image processing. I’m confident that with this newfound knowledge and I know I’ll be better equipped to tackle work challenges and contribute to innovative solutions within my career.
Were there any real-world applications or projects in your MEng courses that you found useful or valuable?
In my online MEng program, a standout project involved predicting stock market trends using machine learning techniques. This hands-on application provided valuable insights into finance and investment. Additionally, projects in innovation and management, like in my MENG 407: Innovation Tools and Methods and MENG 401: Engineering Management courses, highlighted the intersection of engineering with business strategies. These experiences were valuable and offered insights into how engineering solutions intersect with broader organizational strategies.
What advice do you have for prospective students? Why would you recommend the online MEng program at UIC?
Prospective students should align their goals with the program’s curriculum and faculty expertise. Prioritize time management and self-discipline for successful online learning. I recommend UIC’s online MEng program for its flexibility, quality education, and industry alignment.
How do you plan on using your MEng degree? What are your future career endeavors?
I plan to leverage my MEng degree in either the robotic or IoT sectors within Industrial 4.0. My future career endeavors involve applying advanced engineering principles to innovate and optimize processes in these rapidly evolving industries, contributing to advancements in automation and connectivity.
